Diphtheria Surge in Australia Triggers National Response
There is an outbreak of diphtheria in Australia that can be described as the largest one since 1991 with 245 cases noted for the current year alone. This outbreak came to its climax with the first diphtheria fatality in ten years. As the situation worsened, it was classified by the government as a "national significance" event, and a new package worth $7.2 million was designed to establish pop-up clinics and administer vaccinations to those affected. Fortunately, the situation started improving as a result of a significant number of people being vaccinated against this deadly illness.
